In ways big and small, The Riveter stands with women and their allies truly dedicated to equity of opportunity for all. Their bravery led to what is now known as the Stonewall Uprising which catalyzed into the gay rights movement as we know it today. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, and other trans women of color as well as others in the LGBTQ+ community. Her fight against the police and call to action was answered by Marsha P. Protecting the younger queer folks around her who had also been harassed, searched, and arrested one time too many, Stormé fought back against police violence that had come to characterize the queer social scene in New York City in the late 1960s. On June 28, 1969, Stormé DeLarverie did just that. Transformation, however, happens in the streets, most often led by people who have been pushed so far into the corners, with their backs against the ropes, that they have nothing left to do but push back.
It’s tempting to think that change happens in the pristine halls of our government, or in air-conditioned conferences rooms. It remains an important fact though that all we have achieved so far was only possible due to unapologetic individuals like Stormé who paved the road we are walking on today.“Why don’t you do something?” – Stormé DeLarverie during the Stonewall Uprising in 1969 Of course, the life of our community is far from being perfect and we have a lot of work ahead of us. Stormé DeLarverie is one of the most important figures of all time for the LGBTQ community and people NEED to know her story in order to fully understand where we are today. However, my mission with this book is to change that.
Unfortunately, Stormé’s life story has not been accessible to most of us up until now and she was a very private person who didn’t live her life to stand in the limelight. She will not only be remembered as an influential figure but as an example of the possibilities life has to offer if you live it in accordance with your own truth! For these reasons and many more she is not just a changemaker in the LGBTQ+ community but a person who redefined the times she lived through. She spearheaded not only the drag show scene but is also associated with being the individual to set off the historical “stonewall riots”. Switching seamlessly effortless between the male and female looks and expressions, as well as bridging the very segregated white and black worlds, one could argue that what many would think of as a disadvantage was the very thing that made her so powerful and special.
However, what makes her particularly unique is the fact that despite her racial identity and her coming out as a lesbian, she seems to defy the stereotype of the victim role and appears to have led a life of self-determination, choice and freedom. Ever heard of the black woman responsible for kickstarting the “stonewall riots” and ushering in a new era for the LGBTQ community around the world?īorn in the year 1920 to a black mother and a white father in Louisiana, Stormé Delarverie already had the “perfect” setup for an interesting life story.
